Walking Around Edinburgh, July 10-11, 2018 - WTRD 34-35

Walking Around Edinburgh, July 10-11, 2018 - WTRD 34-35

We left Windermere around 10:00 am on July 10 and arrived late afternoon at our rented flat around 3:30 pm.  The owner of the flat is out of town, so we had the entire flat to ourselves.  We could look out the living room window at Arthur's Seat, a mountain across from us that promised the best view of Edinburgh.

That will be our plan for tomorrow.  Tonight, we have a pizza to bake and plan to just relax this afternoon.

July 11, Wednesday.

We sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast, then head out.  Our plan is to make a large circle starting by climbing Arthur's seat, work our way around to old town Edinburgh and back to our flat in time to watch the Semi-Final Soccer Match between England and Croatia.  We aren't in England anymore, but everyone in Edinburgh seems to be rooting for England's Soccer Team.

Here are photos of our day.

Photos from "our flat".

The houses in Wales and Windermere are slate color.  In Scotland, the stones are sand color.  By and large the only color to this old drab buildings comes from flowers.  A few buildings have set themselves apart with color.

As we moved out of the residential area into Hollyrood park, we asked a man walking with his family which trail we should take to Arthur's Seat.  We knew we were in Scotland, when he pointed to the trail, and said "Take this track up the hill, turn left at the rood, and a right past the bonnie wee loch."

And then we come to the "Bonnie wee loch"
and continue to climb to the top where we enjoy many fine views.

Yes, a fine but precarious photo op.

We work our way down the mountain.

Opened in 2004, the architecture seems odd to us, but has won several awards
but is controversal with the public.

The buildings look like something we see in Harry Potter Films.

We enjoy the vibrant downtown area with street buskers, shops, squares and St. Giles Cathedral

By the time we head back to our flat, it's nearly 6:00 pm.  Everything but the pubs are closing up in anticipation of the big Soccer Game.  We return to our flat after walking nearly 9 miles, over 20,000 steps and climbing 70 flights of stairs.  Russ flips on the television and we settle in for the soccer game with a glass of wine.  We like the rest of UK are disappointed by the results, but the Croatians simply outplayed England.  The final between France and Croatia should be exciting, and England still has a chance at third place.

We leave tomorrow for St. Andrews.

All is well with the Worrall Travel Rs in Scotland
