Eventually, we turn away from the sea and drive east toward the mountains. We continue driving in desolate mountains. Every once in a while, the mountains are punctuated with river valleys that are green and crops are being grown, rice, olives, corn. Brown rivers from Andes rain fall Give waynt vlearer snowmelt rivers.
Today's Itinerary:
Day 4-6: Arequipa
"Continue travelling by private van to Arequipa (approx 10 hrs).Standing at the foot of El Misti Volcano and oozing the best of Spanish colonial charm, Arequipa vies with Cuzco for the title of Peru's most attractive city. Built out of a pale volcanic rock called sillar, the old buildings dazzle in the sun, giving the city its nickname the 'White City'. The main plaza, with its cafes and nearby cathedral, is a lovely place to while away the day. You will have a walking tour of Arequipa with a local guide. The tour includes a visit to the main square, the San Ignacio Chapel with its impressive colonial mural paintings, the Santa Catalina Monastery, and the suburb of Yanahuara."

We really hate to leave our hacienda lodging. The morning is bright and clear, and the flora and fauna are lovely.
It's a long day of driving (10 hours +) with a few short stops for bathroom breaks and to check out cactus crops
and olive products..
We see more desert. It seems to go on forever, then we drive up, over, and through foothills of rocky sand and dirt that tumbles towards the sea.
The road is twisting this way and that. There are few guardrails and little shoulders.
I am happy to be sitting midway back on the bus where I don't have to watch us passing cars or seeing cars coming at us in our lane, but I am looking over the cliffs straight down at the ocean.

We arrive in Arequipa, about 2,300 meters high at 8:00 pm Our bus drivers did a terrific job driving on these roads for over 10 hours, and delivering us safely. They must turn around immediately and drive 18 hours back to Lima because the bus is scheduled tomorrow.
